Introduction to TII

The Technology Innovation Institute (TII) is a leading global scientific research center and the applied research arm of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC). TII’s core objectives are to strengthen the UAE’s applied research capabilities by developing breakthrough real-world solutions, fostering local and global partnerships to progress research in advanced technologies, and attracting the best scientific talent via world-class infrastructure, facilities, and research funding.

Through its trailblazing technology solutions, TII builds crucial IP for the UAE via collaborations with industry and academia. It is home to 10 research centers, each dedicated to a specialized advanced technology area - Advanced Materials, Autonomous Robotics, Cryptography, AI and Digital Science, Directed Energy, Quantum, Secure Systems, Propulsion and Space, Biotechnology, and Renewable and Sustainable Energy. These research centers align strategically with the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030 and help fortify the country’s innovation ecosystem by finding viable technology solutions to global challenges.

Working at the intersection of discovery science and transformative technology, TII’s key milestones to date include building the national cryptography library, developing variations of a post-quantum cryptography library, launching the region’s first electromagnetic compatibility labs, establishing the region’s first Impact Lab, developing the first metal additive manufacturing feedstock designed in the Middle East known as AMALLOY, unveiling the blockchain-powered carbon emissions tracking and trading platform, and most notably, developing the UAE’s first homegrown, open source, and top-ranked Falcon Large Language model series; including Falcon 40B and Falcon 180B.

TII currently employs a global community of scientists and researchers, establishing multiple partnerships with universities, research centers, and industries to continue expanding the R&D ecosystem in Abu Dhabi and the wider UAE. TII has contributed scientific papers and books, submitted patents, and hosted subject-specific, specialized seminars. TII’s researchers are free to conduct proprietary or collaborative research in an innovation-led and high-energy workplace, different from those usually found in nationally funded science and technology institutions.

TII is inspiring innovation for a better tomorrow.
