The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) supports the science and technology that will make it possible to cure, prevent, or manage all diseases by the end of the 21st century. Our vision is to build the future of science by advancing biomedical research and leveraging advances in AI. Over the next 10 years, we’re working to understand the mysteries of the cell and how cells interact within systems, which we believe will lead to discoveries that will change medicine in the decades that follow.
AI will play a critical role in driving the next wave of scientific discovery, which is why CZI is building and funding one of the world’s largest computing systems for nonprofit life science research to enable AI at scale. We are leveraging this high-powered computing to build virtual cell models that can predict the behavior of healthy and diseased cells. We believe this effort will deepen our understanding of human biology at a molecular level — bringing scientists closer to curing, preventing, or managing all diseases by the end of this century.
We’re also building a platform where biologists and machine learning researchers can more easily access curated, large AI models of biology and the datasets they were built on. This lowers the barriers for biologists to use AI for specific biological tasks and allows ML/AI researchers to rapidly iterate and improve the quality, utility, and performance of models, which will in turn speed up the process of science.
